Keeping moving costs down
Moving can be expensive. Here are some tips to help you save and even make some money in the days and weeks before and after your move.
- Reduce the shipment. Weight equals money. Be prepared to be tough when making decisions about what to take with you. Get rid of old furniture and items that you haven’t used in ages. Why pay to have something moved that will go straight to the basement, attic, bookshelf or closet to collect dust?
- Hold a moving sale. Make some extra cash by selling your unwanted items. Hold a garage sale, post an online auction or place an ad in the local paper.
- Plan well in advance. The further ahead you plan your move the better chance you’ll have at saving on things like airline tickets and hotels. Some moving companies have cheaper rates for moving in off-season or during the week.
- Scale back extra services. If your budget is tight, consider packing up your belongings yourself.
- Use recycled boxes. Ask friends who have moved recently to give or sell you their boxes. Visit your local grocery store or retailer and ask for their empty boxes.
- Round up volunteers. Ask friends or family members to help out with packing, loading or cleaning.
- Get deposit refunds. Call your utility companies (gas, electricity, water, phone), gym, video store, rental bond, etc.
- Move yourself. It will take more time and energy but moving yourself can save you lots of money.
- Shop around. Get at least three quotes from reputable removal companies.
- Prepare a moving budget. Planning is key to a successful move. Knowing in advance the expenses you’re likely to incur will help keep you on track and out of debt.
