As soon as you know you are moving. The more lead time you are able to give a moving company the more likely you will be able to move on your preferred dates.

Yes, it is recommended you ask for an in-home estimate. An estimate will allow the mover to see exactly what you will be moving and you will have a better idea of what you’ll be paying.

You will need to sign an industry approved contract and any insurance forms. If you are moving your belongings interstate, internationally or into storage, you will also need to sign an inventory at uplift and delivery.

We recommend that you obtain at least three quotes. If you are choosing reliable moving companies, their quotes should be fairly similar. Ask questions and call references before signing contracts.

This will depend on a number of factors such as time, money, distance and complexity of your move. Because moving isn’t an everyday occurrence most people find that employing the services of a reputable removalist is money well spent. Professional moving companies are trained in packing, loading, unloading furniture and belongings. They know the best, most efficient methods and techniques to ensure your belongings are transported safely. You will save money if you do-it-yourself but you’ll also have to factor in the time and energy it takes to move.

Yes. Travel time is usually calculated from the time the truck leaves the removalists depot to your home and back again. The charge may be included in the price or added as an extra charge. Ask your removalist how much this will be prior to signing your contract.

It depends on the removalist and the type of move (local, interstate or international). Some companies charge on an hourly basis, others by weight and distance. Some removalists will have minimum weights/hours required. How the moving company charges should be clearly stated on the contract, so make sure you read all the fine print before signing.

Summer is usually the busiest time of the year for moving companies. If you can, move outside peak-season. If not, then the earlier to you can plan your move the better chance you’ll have of getting the dates you need.

It is highly recommended that you take out transit and storage insurance while your goods are in transit. This can be arranged through your removalist. Read our section on Insurance Options for more information.

Yes, but if you pack your own boxes the removalist will take no responsibility if there are any breakages. These items will also not be covered by insurance. If you decide to pack items yourself refer to our packing guide for tips. The basic principals of good packing are: wrap items individually, provide plenty of cushioning, and pack firm, don’t under or over pack boxes.
If you are moving internationally some countries have restrictions on self packing due to security measures. Check with your removalist.

A reputable removalist will use speciality plastic to wrap your furniture to protect it during transport or storage. Removal Blankets and pads are also used to keep furniture from getting scratched, dirty or damaged.

This is not necessary. Carpet padding can be placed on the floor during the move. Address any specific concerns with your mover.

Yes. Most major appliances need to be specially prepared for transportation to reduce the chance of damage. Doors should be locked and moving parts need to be securely fastened. Refer to manufactures’ instructions. This is your responsibility and any preparations/servicing should be done prior to moving day. Some removal companies offer appliance services at an extra cost.

It is best to pack all your clothing items in boxes but some companies will allow you to keep lightweight items inside drawers as long as the item can be easily carried. Special wardrobe (port-a-robes) boxes are used to move hanging items, so don’t take clothes off hangers.

For same day removals, food can be moved. Although it is advisable to use up frozen foods in the weeks leading up to the move and throw way opened jars or bottles. Only canned foods and vacuum-sealed foods are allowable in storage.

You can get these from your removal company. Alternately, visit your local shopping centre for extra boxes, or look in the classified section of the local newspaper or online, some people resell old boxes. Do not use fruit boxes for long distance moves as they are prohibited for transportation in some states.

If you are moving locally, some removers will transport plants. Plants are generally not accepted on long distance moves because they may suffer from lack of water and light. Also some states prohibit the transportation of plants. Check for regulations before you move.
