Choosing a Termite Control Company
The first step is to find an experienced, reputable pest controller. One way to do that is by ringing around various companies, asking questions and comparing answers. You need to get a sense of their competence and professionalism. You don't want a shonky operator (and they are out there) playing with your house's future.
Termite pest controllers:
- Must be licensed operators, with a number of years' experience on the job. Trainees need to be supervised. Don't be afraid to ask how many years' experience the pest controller has.
- The person who conducts the pest inspection on the property should also be the person who installs the chemical treatment, if that is required. The controller should know the area and, ideally, be able to provide written references from other clients for you to check.
- Is the person an employee or a sub-contractor? If a sub-contractor, what responsibility do they take if future problems arise?
- A pest controller should come prepared with a range of quality equipment, from torches to a moisture meter, and be able to explain fully what they are doing.
Insurance and warranties:
- Professional pest controllers should be covered by both professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
- Read contracts carefully and make sure you understand what you're agreeing to, particularly as it relates to warranties against future termite infestations. It all may sound good, but check the fine print.
- Note that most home insurance policies do not cover termite damage to the building.
- Check to see whether the pest control company has a complaints division or is a member or a recognised industry association - just in case there are future disputes.
Pricing
Inspections can cost anywhere from $150 to $400 and may take up to a few hours. Even if given the all clear, inspections may need to be repeated once every 12 months.
