Wasps and hornets
What makes wasps and hornets serious pests and not bees? Wasps and hornets sting repeatedly; bees do not. There are two main pest species in Australia: the Bald Faced Hornet (actually a wasp) and the Paper Wasp. Larger than bees, they have black bodies with a coloured (yellow, white or red) stripe, and make their nests in trees, shrubs and occasionally building overhangs. Wasps and hornets require a lot of water and can travel far from their nest in search of it; your backyard pool or birdbath can seem very attractive to them in the hot summer months when they are at their most active. They are also attracted to sweetness, which is why they can sometimes be seen buzzing around soft cans and drinks.
Control
Very small numbers of wasps or hornets may be killed through the use of an insecticide, but larger numbers can be difficult to treat, particularly as it may be impossible to find the nest. Pyrethrin insecticides are among the most effective treatments, which can be sprayed in the garden where the insects have been seen - this treatment will need regular application. Mosquito coils and natural insect incense are also good repellents.
If you do find the nest, do not attempt to destroy it yourself. Incomplete destruction of a wasp or hornet nest will create a very angry swarm of insects - which may remain that way for days. A professional pest controller will come prepared with the appropriate protective clothing and registered insecticides. Treatment is usually at dusk or night, when all the wasps and hornets are in the nest. Baits are also being investigated as a possible treatment method.
