Gates fall into two categories; driveway gates and pedestrian gates. Residential gate styles range from ornamental arbours, simple timber walk gates to large steel estate style designs.
The two main elements of a gate are:
- Physical. The style of the gate should match the style of the fence in both form and function. Design boils down to a matter of personal taste. Gate designs come in a wide variety of materials, styles and colours for this very reason. More careful consideration should be given to the function of the gate. If you have installed a tall, solid privacy fence then your gate should have the same characteristics. Likewise, a security gate should be tall, not easy to climb and have a strong high quality lock which cannot be easily broken into.
- Access. Access control refers to the range of products that allow gate entrance to authorised persons. The simplest, most common access control device is the lock and key. Keyed locks are not all that practical on front gates but are useful for side or rear gates where access is limited. Latches and bolts are the commonly used hardware for gates. Childsafe locks are mandatory on pool gates and are also a good choice for some yard gates where children and pets are a primary consideration. For driveway solutions there are a number of sophisticated automatic access control and security products available including, remote control, PIN activated and intercom.
