It is possible to install a fence yourself, but make sure that you are up to speed on the building regulations for your area and have the appropriate permits. If you decide to hire a fencing contractor to construct your fence, follow these tips to help you make the right choice:

  1. Does the fence installer have experience and references?
Ask the installer for names of previous customers, and to provide you with examples of completed fencing projects that you can view. Be aware of contractors that are Jack-of-all-trades, as they may not have the proper knowledge to install certain types of fencing. Fence regulations must be followed in order to avoid potential hazards.
  2. Is the fencing contractor affiliated with a professional organisation or has a builder's license?
Affiliation with a professional organisation can indicate that the contractor maintains certain professional standards and possesses knowledge on fence regulations and codes which are in place in your area. Having a builder's license is another step to ensure that you are dealing with a reputable company.
  3. Does the fence installer provide a warranty on labour?
Some fencing contractors and installers will provide a warranty on labour. Warranty times may vary but 12 months is a reasonable period.
  4. Ask for materials delivery and installation timeframes.
Make sure you understand the length of time it will take to construct your particular type of fencing. Unrealistic planning might mean the dog has to stay at the kennel a few extra nights!
  5. Discuss and agree on payment times ahead of time.
Work out terms of payment prior to the commencement of your fence project. Some installers will require partial payment upfront, the balance due on satisfactory completion of the job, others might work on a weekly or hourly rate.
