Before you start digging up your yard, there are several key things you should do:
- Contact your local council. Permits are generally required to build a fence, particularly pool fences. Some councils have height restrictions, setback regulations, style guidelines and banned materials lists. (See: directory of local councils.)
- Ensure the product meets Australian fencing safety standards. Only use fencing products that have been approved for use in Australia.
- Verify your property lines. If in doubt of your property lines think about hiring a land surveyor.
- Discuss your plans with your neighbour. Dividing fences are joint property so you may only have to pay for half the cost of a new fence. (See: Building a neighbour friendly fence)
