Whether you decide to install your fence yourself or hire a professional fence contractor, here are some things to consider before, during and after constructing a fence:
- Are the fence lines properly marked?
- Have you checked property lines?
- Have council zoning regulations and building codes been satisfied?
- Do you and/or your fence contractor have a valid building permit?
- Have your neighbours been notified?
- Are underground utilities marked?
- Measure depth of post holes to ensure they are at the manufacturer's specified depth.
- Check post spacing to ensure they do not exceed the distance set forth in the specifications or contract.
- Never rest wooden fence post directly on soil, this will encourage rotting. Set post in concrete.
- Fences should follow the contour of the ground. Fence post should only be level if the ground is level.
- Do gates operate smoothly? Is the fence straight and true?
- Do you have a copy of the written warranty from the fence manufacturer and the fence installer?
