Which is the DIY Best Method?
If you decide to clean the carpets yourself, then you need to do some research – using the wrong method, machine or cleaning agents, or not using the machinery properly, could seriously damage your carpets. You may think you are saving money but the results may be poor.
Carpet cleaning is much more complex than many other cleaning jobs around the house. It requires knowledge of carpet fibres, stains and appropriate cleaning agents, as well as experience and expertise in using the machinery.
When thinking DIY, also think about the following:
- Does the equipment have enough vacuum power to extract the cleaning solution from the carpet fast enough? Wet carpets can be a recipe for disaster.
- Which cleaning method is best for your carpet?
- Shampooing machines leave residue on the carpet, which can accumulate and cause stickiness.
- Hot water extraction ("steam") machines are the most popular for residential use, but need to be used carefully. Improper use can leave the carpet overly wet, especially in high traffic areas, and cause problems.
- Dry-absorbent compound method requires thorough vacuuming to make sure no powder is left on the carpet, as this can cause discolouration.
- Will the method ensure that the carpet dries within 12 hours of cleaning? Prolonged dampness can lead to mildew growth and bacteria in the carpet, or cause a separation of the backing. A wet carpet can develop problems.
- Will you be using fans or a dehumidifier to help reduce the drying time?
- Does your carpet have a stain resistant treatment? If so, it needs to be treated with specific products or the stain resistance will be impaired and the warranty will be voided.
- Does the cleaning method include spotting solutions with bleaches or silicone based treatments? These can affect the colour of the carpet.
- Does the warranty on your carpet include certain types of cleaning methods? If you use the wrong one, your warranty may become void.
